The Pros and Cons of Becoming a Pro Gambler (Part 1)

With the way it tends to be portrayed in popular culture, you’d be forgiven for thinking pro gambling would be a dream come true.  Which it can be…for those who pull it off.

Truth is, ‘going pro’ as a gambler isn’t quite as easy as starting a new job in the conventional sense. It’s a readily available option, given the availability and accessibility of online gambling these days. But at the same time, gambling never has been and never will be something that guarantees income.

Hence, the big difference between gambling and ‘working’ for a living – the latter does at least come with some guarantees.

Time to Pursue the Professional Path?

Evaluating the potential ups and downs of becoming a professional gambler is essential, if it’s something you’re actively considering. There are some seriously fantastic aspects to the whole pro gambling thing, which can make it a seemingly irresistible prospect.

After all, what could be better than a career dedicated to playing your favourite casino games?

Nevertheless, making a career out of something where the odds are rarely in your favour isn’t without its downsides. Therefore, we’ll be dedicating this special two-part post to a full rundown of the pros and cons of becoming a pro gambler.

Starting (of course) with the pros, of which there are a fair few to consider:

Pro #1 – Gambling Can Be Exceptionally Enjoyable

First up, the whole point of gambling (and playing online casino games) is that it is fun. It’s a pursuit that’s primarily about enjoyment and entertainment, so who wouldn’t want to do it as a career?

There are comparatively few jobs out there where you genuinely get paid for doing something you enjoy doing. Some people are lucky enough to have jobs they love, but most people do them simply because they have to. Precisely why it’s called ‘work’ and not ‘fun’.

If you can make a career out of gambling, you could find yourself in a position where you cannot wait for Monday morning. Not that this is when you will be doing most of your gambling, but still…you get the point!

Pro #2 – Gambling Encourages You To Build Confidence And Courage

The professional gambling scene is no place for the proverbial shrinking violet.  It is only possible to get by as a pro gambler or semi-pro if you have total confidence in yourself and your capabilities.

Gambling in all its forms is a pursuit that takes courage to pull off. There are risks involved in each and every move you make, so you need to have total courage in your convictions.

Hence, gambling is something that can nurture courage and confidence like nothing else. You need to have a fair amount at your disposal to begin with, but you could still find the whole thing a surprisingly empowering experience.

Pro #3 – There’s Serious Money To Be Made

Are there any guarantees when gambling? No. Is there a serious amount of money to be made for those who get it right?  Very much so!

This is, of course, the primary point of appeal for gambling in the eyes of most people. Master the art of playing any specific casino game to perfection and you could find yourself turning a tidy profit. Make your way to true high-roller status and the amount of money that can change hands with the turn of a single card can be ludicrous.

Again, under no circumstances can you bank on casino gaming as a profitable pursuit. But at the same time, there are few activities in the world where you can turn next to nothing into a small fortune literally overnight.

Pro #4 – It Teaches Invaluable Skills and Life Lessons

There’s much you learn while gambling that can benefit your life away from the table. Assuming you plan on taking your gambling seriously, you’ll find yourself benefiting from a wide variety of important life lessons.

For example, you’ll learn to manage your finances and balance your budget with pinpoint precision. You’ll learn how to become a more confident negotiator, you’ll build the patience of a saint and you’ll also benefit from improved intuition.

Not to mention, all the statistical and mathematical elements that accompany successful gambling – something else you’ll master as you progress.

Pro #5 – It Can Also Teach You Grace and Humbleness

Becoming a successful gambler is only possible if you can master the art of walking away from a loss with a smile on your face. Or at least, without throwing a tantrum – safe in the knowledge that each loss represents a valuable lesson.

Good gamblers know how to walk gracefully away from a loss and react to wins with humbleness. You have to be able to take the rough with the smooth, as chances are there will be plenty of both.

Losing your temper and flying into a fit of rage each time things go wrong is a recipe for disaster. It’s also something that will make it impossible for you to succeed in professional gambling circles.

Pro #6 – You Get To Work Entirely On Your Own Schedule

Last up, becoming a professional gambler in this day and age means benefiting from 24/7 accessibility. You literally have the option of gambling at any time of day or night, any day of the week and for any duration you choose.

It’s no longer a case of having to visit traditional casinos and scheduling your activities in accordance with their opening times. All of which adds up to something that could result in the ultimate work-life balance.

You work when you want, you take time off when you want, and you enjoy the pleasure of being your own boss. Something the vast majority of workers dream of, but never come close to accomplishing.

Stay tuned for the second half of our two-part post into the pros and cons of becoming a pro gambler, in which we’ll be taking a look at the reverse side of the coin…
